Tractor-trailer overturns, blocks Colorado 9 in Silverthorne
3:45 p.m. update: An attempt to right the trailer was unsuccessful — the roof ripped open — so the entire load will have to be off-loaded. Sounds like it could be another 6-8 hours of at least a partial closure of the northbound lanes of Colorado 9. Southbound has been reduced to one lane, too. The crash happened about 2 p.m.
Lake Dillon firefighters are on the scene of an overturned tractor-trailer blocking Colorado 9 in Silverthorne just north of Interstate 70.
Although the driver suffered no injuries and did not collide with any other vehicles, the rig carrying goods bound for a Wal-Mart has forced the closure of the northbound lanes. Traffic is being diverted to Stephens Way and around to Wildernest Road. Meanwhile, crews are determining whether any hazardous materials are inside and start off-loading the goods so the trailer can be righted and cleared from the roadway.
The semi apparently was traveling down Interstate 70 from the Eisenhower Tunnel and negotiated the Silverthorne #205 exit but failed to make the right turn onto Colorado 9. It crashed in front of the Shell station and has blocked all three lanes.
The roadway probably will be closed for at least a couple of hours.
This news release will be updated.
